One of the biggest draws, almost one of the “seven wonders of the twentieth century” , in New York City (when I was around 8 – 12 years old) , was the Automat.
It was a magical place where you could deposit a coin (or coins – it was all coins, no paper money) and get a sandwich, a piece of pie, a coffee. It was magic. It was bigger than the photo above, but it was just as modern looking.
So cool, Dad! This thing served warmed foods that were wrapped in rice – kind of like fried rice balls. Mike got something with vegetables and noodles wrapped in fried rice. It was interesting and I think one of his lesser life choices. :)
