Lately, Myron has been really excited about this walker from his friend, Emmy. He will walk / run in circles around the chimney, and Em and I will hide in different places and then jump out and say “boogie boogie!”, to which he laughs and then starts running faster. Sometimes he falls down when he does this, and sometimes he takes it in stride, but sometimes he cries a little bit, so we soothe him for a minute and then he is back to the races. One of the words he has been saying a lot lately is “cookie”. He says it with no reference to actual cookies, so we are thinking it might have to do with us saying “boogie”. Also we have been watching some Sesame Street, so Cookie Monster may be part of this as well.
Also, we got Myron his own bike! About half the time I tried to do our papa and Myron bike ride, he just wanted to examine my bike and spin the wheels and really did not want to sit in his seat. One of those days, we just ended up walking down the street while holding the bike. So even though he isn’t walking on his own quite yet, I thought it was time to get him his own bike to play with. We went to Recycle-a-Bike, and the shop coordinator picked out three of the smallest kids’ bikes they had and brought them to us. While I was filling out a form, Myron picked this one up and started walking it across the parking lot, so this is the one we got. It was the smallest one (but still too big for him to stand over), and it had training wheels, so he could use it as his outdoor walker pretty easily. So now sometimes we just push this around in our backyard, and sometimes we do still go on bike rides with him in the kid seat.
Our daycare uses baby sign language, and they gave us a sheet of words they frequently use, like “food”, “done”, “more”, “milk”, “play”. We took that and added a couple of very important first words like “bicycle”, of course. He signs “bicycle” sometimes if he just sees the garage. He also does it when he sees something that has a bicycle drawn on it like our plates or a mug. A photo collage of a bunch of sharrows (the bicycle stencils with arrows, painted on roads) that Becky gave me once. A tiny toy bike that I got in a Kinder egg once. All the shirts I own that have bicycle wheels on them. I had forgotten how many bicycle related things we have until Myron pointed out every one, every time he sees them. And he knows the spoken word too, so I have to be ready to take him on a bike ride or let him push around his bike walker before I say “bici”.
Myron has also made me realize what words in Spanish sound the same. I asked once if he wanted to brush his teeth (cepillarse los dientes), and he responded by moving his hand and hissing like a snake (serpiente). Once I asked him if he farted (¿tiraste in pedo?) and he started woofing like a dog (perro).
Em introduced Myron to bubbles. He got the hang of the dipping the wand and then blowing routine pretty quickly. He successfully blowed a few bubbles and then progressed to licking the wand. I thought he would stop after he got the first taste of soap, but he did this several times, and somehow it didn’t seem to bother him.
He then screwed the cap on and off. This was fun for a solid ten minutes.
